
Mr. Henry Holbrey Hammond emigrated to Peru in the mid 1860's as a representative
of the firm Graham Rowe & Co. of Liverpool for Peru, Chile and Bolivia.
Graham Rowe & Co. was active in the trading business between England and the
recently-independent republics of South America.
Mr. Henry H. Hammond was the son of Mr. William John Hammond (1799-1848) of
Liverpool, a well-known English comedy actor and manager of his time. W.J. Hammond
was a close friend of personalities such as Charles Dickens and in London he directed the
Strand Theater and for a brief time was a manager at the Drury Lane. His most
acclaimed performance was held at the Strand Theatre in London on July 10, 1837, where he
played the role of Sam Weller in The Pickwickians, a dramatization of Charles
Dickens' The Pickwick Papers. Mr. W.J. Hammond was married to Mary Jerrold,
sister of Douglas Jerrold, the famous English playwright and founder of London's
"Punch" magazine.

In Peru, Mr. Henry H. Hammond married a Peruvian lady, Elisa Suthers, with whom he had
three sons, Henry Francis, Charles and Arthur. Mr. Henry F. Hammond was
educated at Rugby College in England and upon his return to Peru continued with his
father's business in Peru, marrying Alejandrina de Lavalle and established a
